چکیده

This paper revives old descriptive data on Awa, a Papuan language of the Kainantu group. The tonal system was described in detail by Loving (1973), where he reports a series of toneless noun suffixes, falling into six classes depending on their tonal alternations when combined with a noun root. This paper demonstrates that the suffixes are best understood as carrying lexical tone; the alternations in form arise from the interaction of typologically natural tonotactic constraints. While the system can be described in autosegmental terms without much difficulty, a formal constraint-based analysis is less straightforward. I show that strict ranking, as in Optimality Theory (Prince and Smolensky 1993) fails to capture the data patterns due to cumulativity effects, some of which cannot be naturally captured even with Local Constraint Conjunction (Smolensky 2006). The data are successfully modeled in Harmonic Grammar (Legendre et al. 1990).

Super Additive Similarity in Dioula Tone Harmony

Phonological ganging is a type of cumulativity in constraint interaction where one strong constraint C1 can be overtaken by two weaker constraints C2 and C3 together but not by C2 or C3 independently (e.g., Jäger and Rosenbach 2006). In strict-ranking Optimality Theory (OT), phonological ganging is achieved via (local) constraint conjunction (e.g., Smolensky 1993, 2006; Baković 2000; Ito and Me...

Gradience in Linguistic Data

This paper provides a survey of the theoretical and experimental findings on degrees of grammaticality, with a special focus on gradience in syntax. We first discuss the theoretical relevance of gradient data, and argue that such data should be elicited experimentally in order to be reliable. We then review a set of experimental findings on gradience, which lead to the hypothesis that linguisti...

A Description of Derivational Affixes in Sarhaddi Balochi of Granchin

Sarhaddi Balochi dialect, a language variety of Western (Rakhshani) Balochi, employs derivation through affixation as one of its word formation processes. The purpose of this article is to present a synchronic description of the way(s) different derivational affixes function in making complex words in Sarhaddi Balochi as spoken in Granchin[1] district located about 35Kms to the southeast of Kha...

Iranian EFL Learners' Processing of English Derived Words

An interesting area of psycholinguistic inquiry is to discover the way morphological structures are stored in the human mind and how they are retrieved during comprehension or production of language. The current study probed into what goes on in the mind of EFL learners when processing derivational morphology and how English and Persian derivational suffixes are processed. 60 Iranian EFL learne...

Cumulativity without Closure of the Domain under Finite Unions

For nonmonotonic logics, Cumulativity is an important logical rule. We show here that Cumulativity fans out into an infinity of different conditions, if the domain is not closed under finite unions.
